Greetings from Clarksdale!

Friends, family and darling dears!

It's been a few months since I've sent an update, and a few things have changed! I'm currently based in Clarksdale, MS working at Quapaw Canoe Company and riding my bike around the incredible Delta landscape. So far the change from NYC has been wonderful.
I've also had a few happenings with music!
I'm excited to have been included in The River Signal, a podcast created by three men making their way down the 2,000 some miles of the Mississippi River in a paddlewheel riverboat.
I was lucky enough to meet these guys in Helena, AR and play a few songs on the deck of their lovely boat while we drank coffee and swam in the river. You can subscribe to the free podcast and listen to my episode here.

I was also a guest on Melody Wed's Songwriter Sessions, with Jessica Lindsay. We discussed the challenges and joys of songwriting, my music and writing process. Also the intimidating size of the bugs down here in the Delta. Watch the hour long interview here!

A new adventure awaits!

My dearest friends and New Yorkers,

The time has come for me to get the hell outta dodge. It seems only right to write this today on the eve of yet another potential housing crisis here in NYC. In August I'll be leaving this fine city and heading south to Clarksdale, Mississippi to work with John Ruskey at Quapaw Canoe Company! It's a pretty drastic change but I feel confident, excited and ready. Until then I'll be spending the summer in Boston teaching textiles and horsing around with bands like American Echoes and The Barbazons.  It's been an insanely beautiful nine years living in what seems to be almost every neighborhood in Brooklyn and Manhattan, accidentally waking up at Coney Island at 5am on the D train, having all night benders, walking through the coldest nights and intolerably humid days, meeting weirdos from all walks of life, seeing such beauty and despair all at the same time. I am alive, I am terrified, I am buzzing, I am firing at both ends. I am ready to implode and I am ready to let this time go.  Don't worry, I'll be playing music and running wild no matter where I end up. See ya on the flip side!

Breathing under the weight

'How good it feels to breathe under his weight and to sleep on his chest offered. In darkness, in safety, big breath through morning light and summer air'  -zbs, may 2015

I flew back into New York City finding the weather changed, warm now and the chilly Spring nights almost gone. It's barely Memorial day and already we're at 80 degree days, humidity creeping into our greener streets. My time in Mississippi with Quapaw Canoe Company was incredible. Truly an experience I will forever remember, and will forever change me. A woman I met named Betsy said it simply, said it best. "The river changed my life". She said this as we paddled down the mighty Mississippi on a sunny Sunday afternoon in a giant canoe named Banana Boat. I had only been in Clarksdale a few days at that point, but I had a strong feeling the river would alter my life as well...I think it's impossible for anyone to leave the river unchanged.  Here are a few photos that show the beauty, wildness and incredible power I experienced both on and off the river:

I don't have any shows lined up for the future, I'll be leaving NYC for the summer to teach at an arts camp outside Boston and beyond that my NYC plans are on hold. It's so hard to maintain a life in this city year round, and coming back when Spring, now Summer is in full swing, you feel the throbbing pulse, and realize (all over again) how dead the city becomes in winter. But I don't think I will stay here much longer. My heart calls out for change, for a wilder existence and although New York holds a big part of my heart, she's also made me ignore and repress a bigger piece. So change is gonna come, most certainly, as it always does.

Love, Zoë

Traveling gypsy seen heading south...

Well I've been back in NYC for about 2 months after a warm, beautiful, magical and successful west coast tour and it's time to hit the road again. This time around I'll be spending three weeks in Mississippi working with the Quapaw Canoe Company as a visiting artist and program volunteer. I'm so excited to learn, explore and create new work with this amazing non-profit based out of Clarksdale, MS. Check out their website here, and their featured segment on Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain on CNN!  I won't be playing many shows up north for a little bit while I focus on some other pots I have brewing but if you miss me and need a fix, follow me on instagram: @zoesundra or read my blog...which you already are!
Love always, Zoë

West coast best coast/East coast winter can suck it

I'm not one to throw shade at my roots, but I, like so many east coasters this year, am OVER it. Today it is a balmy 18 degrees fahrenheit (and sunny!) and I'm heading into my 5th day of isolation (I have at least made it outside to the gym everyday). I've been cooking and baking everything I can while watching Sonic Highways, and I even managed to write a song. I mean, at least I haven't been smoking or drinking copious amounts of wine. I'd say I'm an out right saint.  Needless to say my tour up the west coast couldn't have come at a better time, and I felt so lucky to be able to play my music and meet so many new friends along the way.

Here's a few photos from my wonderfully successful west coast tour with Fera!

I've got a few shows coming up with DAMES, plus a solo folk show, I hope y'all can come out and play!

Wintertime brings holiday shows and a west coast tour!

Every year when that first windy night hits and the sky grows dark around 4:30, I think "Noooooooo! Not again!"
But it's true, winter is coming. Has come.
And with that are a few exciting shows I'm so excited to be part of, as well as a west coast tour with Caitlin Mahoney (NYC) and Fera (CA) to chase away the January blues (dates TBA).
